Friday

Horseback Riding – Take time to enjoy the local riding stables here in the Pocono Mountains, and take in the panoramic views while horseback riding. We transport you to and from the stables. From there, simply enjoy the great outdoors. Reservations must be made with the recreation staff at least two days before this activity, and are limited to the first eight people who sign up.

CSI: Historic Shawnee – Put you mind to work and see if you can solve some of our long time unsolved mysteries of the Inn. The recreation staff presents you with your case file, and from there you have the length of your stay to present your case of the “Who, What, When, Where and Why!”

Weekend Welcome – The activities staff would like to welcome you to the Shawnee Inn and golf resort. Stop by and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, cookies, and some good conversation. Join us as we explain all the fun and exciting things going on to make your stay with us even more enjoyable!

Thursday, September 18, 2008 (Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) — The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is hosting a Bead for Life party on September 24th at 6:30 pm in the Delaware Room.

The party will feature beautiful beaded jewelry made of recycled paper by refugees from Northern Uganda’s brutal war and HIV positive mothers. All of the women Bead for Life works with were living on less than a dollar a day before they began making beads.

Bead for Life partners with over 200 women in Uganda, providing opportunities to lift families out of poverty through the creation of beaded jewelry. The beads are handmade by rolling colorful recycled paper. The love and hope of the beader is present in each bead. Once strung together, they become beautiful necklaces and bracelets.

The money women earn from the sale of beads goes directly into feeding families, buying medicine, paying for school fees, and perhaps saving to start small businesses. All profits from the sale of the beads are invested in projects that fight extreme poverty including health education, housing, and sustainable livelihood. Bead for Life offers people opportunities and jobs, rather than handouts.

Wednesday, September 10, 2008 (Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) — The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort hosted its 57^th annual Shawnee Open on September 8^th and 9^th on the resorts 27-hole championship island golf course.

The Shawnee Open is a Philadelphia Section PGA tournament. This year, two tournaments ran congruently during the Open, a 36-hole individual event and a 36-hole senior event. John Pillar of the Country Club of Woodloch Springs captured first place while Shawnee’s Touring Professional, Brian Bergstol, tied for second with Dave Quinn of the Links Golf Club in the individual’s tournament. Shawnee’s Jim Miller tied for first place with Bill Sautter of the Philly Cricket – Militia.

The Shawnee Open began in 1912, and since then six U.S Open Champions have won the tournament: Fred McLeod, John McDermott, Walter Hagen, James Barnes, Johnny Farrell, and Lawson Little. Former PGA President Jack Connelly also won the event in 1979. Pete Oakley won the Shawnee Open a record six times (1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1992 and 1998), Pete won the Senior British Open in 2004, and most recently, Shawnee’s Touring Professional, Brian Bergstol, qualified for and played the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, California.

The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort’s Golf Professional, Joe Manley, confidently said “We are happy to continue this long time tradition with the best playing professionals in the Philadelphia Section PGA competing.” Past and current PGA Tour and Senior Tour participants played in the event. Joe Manley and his staff were happy to see new faces in the crowd and encourage spectators to come see some great shot-making by the Pro’s next year!

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 (Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) — The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort was nominated for Happenings Magazine’s 2008 “Best Companies to Work for in North East Pennsylvania” award in the medium business category.

The award was based on nominations sent in by employees, and was open to all businesses located throughout Northeast Pennsylvania. The entry forms asked employees to outline the positive aspects of working for their company.

Shawnee received six nominations mentioning perks such as complimentary or discounted rates for resort activities such as spa treatments, fitness facilities, and golf. In addition, employees receive free passes to broadway quality plays at The Shawnee Playhouse, and an opportunity to work in a wonderful environment where beautiful surroundings and friendly people are the most common decorations.

Thursday, July 11, 2008 (Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) — The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is the first property in the Poconos to make a commitment to support Women’s Resources’ “Shelter for Shelter” initiative of their “Campaign for Safehaven”.

Women’s Resources, a community-based, non-profit, crisis-counseling center that serves adult and child victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, set an overall goal on behalf of the Campaign for Safehaven to raise one million dollars in order to refurbish its administration building and shelter. At present, the association has raised $700,000 and is currently campaigning to realize its goal.

If the total funds are raised, the renovations will affectively double the organization’s capacity to service individuals in distress. In 2007, they provided shelter for 169 adults and children totaling 2977 nights and counseling services for a total of 3559 hours. Due to the lack of shelter and counseling space currently available, last year Women’s Resources was forced to turn away 101 adult and child victims of violence.

Shelter for Shelter is the branch of Campaign for Safehaven aimed at recruiting Monroe County’s businesses to aide in achieving Women’s Resources’ goal. On August 2^nd, companies, that have made a commitment to support Shelter for Shelter, will donate one percent of their gross profit for that day. In addition, between the dates of July 15^th and August 15^th Women’s Resources will be selling “dove” cards for a one to five dollar donation, allowing guests of the community to be apart of this very important campaign.

The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is happy to continue to uphold its commitment to community service and is proud to support Women’s Resources in this righteous campaign. The “dove” cards will be available for purchase at Shawnee between the dates of July 15^th and August 15^th. In addition, Women’s Resources is still looking for sponsors to help reach their goal.
