Wednesday, September 10, 2008 (Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) — The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort hosted its 57^th annual Shawnee Open on September 8^th and 9^th on the resorts 27-hole championship island golf course.

The Shawnee Open is a Philadelphia Section PGA tournament. This year, two tournaments ran congruently during the Open, a 36-hole individual event and a 36-hole senior event. John Pillar of the Country Club of Woodloch Springs captured first place while Shawnee’s Touring Professional, Brian Bergstol, tied for second with Dave Quinn of the Links Golf Club in the individual’s tournament. Shawnee’s Jim Miller tied for first place with Bill Sautter of the Philly Cricket – Militia.

The Shawnee Open began in 1912, and since then six U.S Open Champions have won the tournament: Fred McLeod, John McDermott, Walter Hagen, James Barnes, Johnny Farrell, and Lawson Little. Former PGA President Jack Connelly also won the event in 1979. Pete Oakley won the Shawnee Open a record six times (1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1992 and 1998), Pete won the Senior British Open in 2004, and most recently, Shawnee’s Touring Professional, Brian Bergstol, qualified for and played the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, California.

The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort’s Golf Professional, Joe Manley, confidently said “We are happy to continue this long time tradition with the best playing professionals in the Philadelphia Section PGA competing.” Past and current PGA Tour and Senior Tour participants played in the event. Joe Manley and his staff were happy to see new faces in the crowd and encourage spectators to come see some great shot-making by the Pro’s next year!

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 (Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) — The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort was nominated for Happenings Magazine’s 2008 “Best Companies to Work for in North East Pennsylvania” award in the medium business category.

The award was based on nominations sent in by employees, and was open to all businesses located throughout Northeast Pennsylvania. The entry forms asked employees to outline the positive aspects of working for their company.

Shawnee received six nominations mentioning perks such as complimentary or discounted rates for resort activities such as spa treatments, fitness facilities, and golf. In addition, employees receive free passes to broadway quality plays at The Shawnee Playhouse, and an opportunity to work in a wonderful environment where beautiful surroundings and friendly people are the most common decorations.

Thursday, July 11, 2008 (Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) — The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is the first property in the Poconos to make a commitment to support Women’s Resources’ “Shelter for Shelter” initiative of their “Campaign for Safehaven”.

Women’s Resources, a community-based, non-profit, crisis-counseling center that serves adult and child victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, set an overall goal on behalf of the Campaign for Safehaven to raise one million dollars in order to refurbish its administration building and shelter. At present, the association has raised $700,000 and is currently campaigning to realize its goal.

If the total funds are raised, the renovations will affectively double the organization’s capacity to service individuals in distress. In 2007, they provided shelter for 169 adults and children totaling 2977 nights and counseling services for a total of 3559 hours. Due to the lack of shelter and counseling space currently available, last year Women’s Resources was forced to turn away 101 adult and child victims of violence.

Shelter for Shelter is the branch of Campaign for Safehaven aimed at recruiting Monroe County’s businesses to aide in achieving Women’s Resources’ goal. On August 2^nd, companies, that have made a commitment to support Shelter for Shelter, will donate one percent of their gross profit for that day. In addition, between the dates of July 15^th and August 15^th Women’s Resources will be selling “dove” cards for a one to five dollar donation, allowing guests of the community to be apart of this very important campaign.

The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is happy to continue to uphold its commitment to community service and is proud to support Women’s Resources in this righteous campaign. The “dove” cards will be available for purchase at Shawnee between the dates of July 15^th and August 15^th. In addition, Women’s Resources is still looking for sponsors to help reach their goal.

Wednesday, June 11, 2008 (Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) — The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort’s touring golf pro, Brian Bergstol, will tee off at The U.S. Open, in Torrey Pines, California on Thursday, June 12^th at 12:12 pm, and can be watched on NBC.

During Brian’s practice round, he scored an even par on the front nine and three over on the back. These practice scores are impressive because last year’s winner, Angel Cabrera, was able to clinch the championship with a score of five over par. In 2007, Tiger Woods finished third in The U.S. Open at six over par.

In yesterdays practice round, Brian was paired with Charles Howell, a seasoned PGA pro and winner of numerous tournaments, including the Nissan Open by defeating Phil Mickelson in a playoff.

Bergstol, 23, of Mt. Bethel, PA, is Shawnee’s first pro since Sam Snead to qualify and play at the U.S. Open. In addition, Brian is the only player from the Philadelphia section of the PGA that is playing at the Open this year.

The Philadelphia section of the PGA has over 800 members and covers Eastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and the entire state of Delaware. The last golf pro to play in The U.S. Open from the Philadelphia section of the PGA was John Demarco in 2004.

Brian began playing golf later than most of his colleagues. At age 15 he was competing against golfers that were more experienced than him. Unlike Bergstol who taught himself golf, many of his competitors also took lessons and were coached by local golf professionals.

The Shawnee Inn was his high school’s course, and it is also where he formed a relationship with the resort. Since then, Brian has been working in the golf shop, giving lessons, and sharpening his own game. With his handicap of five better than scratch it is obvious that the work is paying off.

Tuesday, June 2, 2008 (Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) — The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort recently sponsored Brian Bergstol to be the resort’s touring professional golfer. Bergstol, of Mt. Bethel, PA, will be departing to take place in the 2008 U.S. Open at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego California. Brian is the first Shawnee professional since Sam Snead to play in the U.S. Open.

Bergstrol finished the 36-hole qualifier at 3-under par, rising from a group of 28 players to earn the second of two qualifying spots. Brian clenched the spot in his first attempt. Finishing the day in three under par, Bergstol shot 71-68 during the sectional qualifier.

Brian, 23, recently graduated from Moravian College where he majored in economics and finance. In addition to academics, he also led Moravian’s golf team in points four years in a row earning the title of captain both his junior and senior years.

Though his college career may seem stunning, last year alone Bergstol claimed over 16 different tournament wins including the Lehigh Valley Amateur Championships, where he won five of six tournaments setting club records in four.

Brian began playing golf later than most of his colleagues. At age 15 he was competing against golfers that were more experienced than him. Unlike Bergstol who taught himself golf, many of his competitors also took lessons and were coached by local golf professionals.

The Shawnee Inn was his high school’s course, and it is also where he formed a relationship with the resort. Since then, Brian has been working in the golf shop giving lessons and sharpening his own game. With his handicap of five better than scratch it is obvious that the work is paying off.

Friday, May 09, 2008(Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania) — Brian Bergstol, Shawnee’s Assistant Golf Professional wins in the first round of the U.S. Open Championship’s local qualifying round, in Bedens Brook Club, Skillman, N.J., yesterday, Thursday, May 08, 2008.

Approximately 93 golfers tried out, each required to have a one or below handicap. The top six elite players were selected in the local qualifying round. Bergstol tied for first place with the lowest score – given the honorary of a co-medalist in this tournament.

So what does this mean for Bergstol? He is now off to The Members Club at Four Streams, in Beallsville, Maryland, on June 2nd. Here he will compete with 80-100 players, where a dozen or so will make it to the U.S. Open from this tournament. Though 50 some golfers are exempt for the qualifying rounds, another 100 plus have a chance to play in the Open. Bergstol definitely has a great chance.
