Bike or Run the Shawnee Trails

Inhale that fresh mountain air! Are you looking to catch a glimpse of the native wildlife, observe the seasonal foliage, or listen to the gently flowing waters of the Delaware River? Riding or running the trails at The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort allows you the opportunity to experience it all. Choose between the two- or three-mile loop or if you’re really feeling adventurous, do both!

The two-mile red trail takes you from the Main Inn across the Grand Lawn and past the legacy collection cottages. You’ll pass Worthington and Minisink Roads on your left while following the river to your right. As the path curves up, take Depuy Drive to its end, then turn around to come back. Along the way, you might encounter wildlife like the ruffed grouse, raccoon, river otter, eastern gray squirrel, white-tailed deer, red fox, eastern coyote, and black bear. You might even see the bald eagles who nest on Shawnee Island. You might not see them but will certainly hear numerous songbirds that call this trail home. You may also take note of the many trees that grow in the rich soils along the floodplain of the Delaware River, some of which include the sugar maple, red oak, white pine, sycamore, beech, and walnut.

The three-mile blue trail takes you from the Inn up the main drive to Golf Course Drive. As you follow Golf Course Drive, to your left will be the golf course and Delaware River, and to your right will be Delaware Lodge and the timeshare villas. At the end of the timeshare villas, you will enter the wooded path known as Rainbow Alley, this connects to Ickes Memorial Drive, and then to Eilenberger Landing Lane. At the end of Eilenberger Landing Lane, you will turn around to come back to the Shawnee Inn. Along this path, you might encounter some of the same wildlife as that of the Red Trail, as well as spotting some of the same foliage.

Whether you be a hardcore cyclist or a casual rider, an avid runner or simply looking to take a leisurely stroll now is the time to hit the trails at The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort! Plus, we have expert tips on the best Poconos hiking trails near Shawnee Inn.

It’s a Train, It’s a Bike, It’s Both

If you’re an active person, but want to see more of the Poconos region in one day than a hike can accomplish, consider taking a bike train at the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. While the starting point for this adventure is about an hour drive away from the Shawnee Inn, this unique experience warrants the journey.

This two-part sight-see begins with a train ride that will take you uphill, doing all the hard work for you. During this train ride, you’ll also hear guides tell you about the history of the region, the railway, and the sights you’re seeing. If you really want to be able to take it all in, there is an available option to sit in an open car—also a great way to cool off on a hot summer day.

Once you’re about 25 miles out, the train will stop to let the bike riders depart. You can even rent a bike if you’re not able to bring your own with you, so there’s no worry about gathering any equipment you might need. If you’re not feeling too confident in your biking, or you just want to go at a leisurely pace and appreciate the beautiful mountains, there’s no worry needed there, either. You set the pace for your own return bike ride, so there’s no pressure to keep up with any fitness buffs or speed demons. This is also a great opportunity to spend time at any of the sights you noticed from the train and want to see again.

You’ll probably have worked up quite an appetite after 25 miles, so you may want to treat yourself to a meal in Jim Thorpe. You may want to grab a giant dinner and a couple of beers at Molly Maguires Pub and Steakhouse, or maybe you want to celebrate your accomplishment with fine dining at Tony Stella’s Encore. Either way, it will mean you’re full and happy on your way back to Shawnee Inn, where you can relax and stretch your legs.

Discover Dingmans Falls

If you want a pleasant walk through nature without all the sweating and sore legs, it’s time to check out Dingmans Creek Trail. Part of the Delaware Water Gap Park, Dingmans Creek Trail is a very easy, part dirt-trail and part wooden walkway, so it’s great if you’re not in the mood for an intense hike. What makes it great is what’s at the end of it: Silver Thread Falls, a skinny but very long waterfall, and Dingmans Falls, the second tallest falls in Pennsylvania, so impressively big you can feel the mist from it at the end of the trail. Located about a half hour from the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, the trail’s two falls are worth the journey, and make for a fabulous photo opportunity and a romantic walk that won’t leave you winded.

This scenic trail has a secret beauty to it year round, the beautiful fall foliage, the fresh snow powder covering the rhododendron, the flowers blossoming in spring and the incredible greenery during the summer. My favorite part about this section of the trail is that there is a secret trail that goes off of the Appalachian trail and it takes you to a beautiful waterfall with a little swimming hole.
